Depending on the nature of your business, you need to be realistic about the viability of your idea. In the Internet age, there are many more opportunities to be had than ever before. There are many business that can function both online and offline. You may not make much a profit from local sales but online you can business a successful and profitable business.

Ascertain where you services or product make sense. Are you looking to remain local? Regional? National? International? World-wide via the Web? If there is no place for what you do that realistically would generate profit, go back to your drawing board for other ideas.

You also may want to work through your business plan extra carefully. During the process of completing the different sections of the plan, you may gain a better understanding of the do-ability of your idea and if there is indeed a market for your product or service.

Besides the financial/profitability part of this decision, you also have to analyze your personal feelings about running a business. After all you have learned through research, are you still confident you can deal with the ins and outs of the business? This might be a good time to find someone who has already been through the start up phase who will allow you to shadow them for a day or more. While your competitors may not be as welcoming to let you see the interworkings of their business, find someone else who does something related to what you plan to start. See how real life works for them and if you are up to the challenge for the long-term.
