How I Plan to Work During the Summer…At Home…With the Kid
Posted by Tisha Tolar on May 13, 2009
Last year around this time, I was very anxious about how my first summer working from home and managing a kid was going to work out. I wrote about it on our former website and you can find the post here. Funny enough, now it is such a blur, I can hardly believe it was a concern. Summer of 2008 was over before I knew it. I still had a business and I was mentally stable.
This year, however, I am not so sure.
The workload has doubled. There is a book in the works. There is 6 year old attitude developing rapidly.
To date, my plans are as follows: school ends on June 2nd. We immediately follow that with a brief road trip for the Empowering Mom ladies to gather together for a few days of collaboration for the good of the business. Upon returning from said road trip, the kid has chosen to return to day camp which will last for 3 weeks from Monday through Friday. This gives me nearly another month of extended and solitary work time during the week day. Bonus! (unbonus – day camp is frickin’ expensive!)
Once July hits, it will be full on me and the kid for the day. I have made arrangements to get a pool pass and plan to spend mornings working and the ever-present threat of “can’t go swimming unless I get some work done” since the pool doesn’t open until noon. Swim the afternoon away until Daddy can come home and take over, allowing me to struggle into work mode and work through the night. The kid is good to go in the mornings now so I feel confident I can work late into the night and sleep in a bit in the morning.
I can only hope! If you are working at home with kids, we’d love to hear what your plans are for the end of the school year! Send us your story!

Debbie said,
Where I live, I’m lucky because the local parks and rec department (part of our town government) runs a day camp program at the local school. Unbelievably, it’s a FREE program (I still cannot believe this…)so my 6 year old can go whenever he wants, every day or just once in awhile. It’s from 9am to 3pm, although unfortunately there is no transportation to or from the program. My guess is he’ll go twice a week. My youngest will have school for 2.5 hours per day through most of the summer (he’s in a special ed preschool that helps keep them in the routine by having year round school instead of breaking for summer and having to start all over again in the fall).
Lucky for me, the kids’ dad works nights, and so is often available a few hours during the day to entertain the kids and give me some work time.
Regardless of scheduling… it can be done! Don’t let summer and having the kids home scare you out of your dream to work from home.
