Set Goals – Then Set Them Higher
Posted by Tisha Tolar on April 29, 2009
It’s been only a few months since the ladies and I merged into our new business. Our goal at the end of last year was to merge successfully. We did it. CHECK.
Our next goal was to find enough work to keep us going. CHECK.
We accomplished that goal so quickly, we then had to set a higher goal – make a certain amount each week for payroll. CHECK.
Not only did we meet our bare minimums, we have blown them out of the water. Of course it took a lot of hard work, it still does, but each time we have set a goal. Goals have been something we set and then strive for, looking forward to making yet another check mark. Without goals, we wouldn’t have much direction as to where we want to be or where our business should be going. The beautiful part is that so far all of our goals have been met or exceeded. In the beginning, we did have reasonable fears but the key was to never let those fears get in the way.
We replaced our fears with our goals. Each reasonable and achievable, provided we stay focused. It is these goals that tell us we are doing right and it is the setting of these goals that give us a purpose. It is in achieving these goals that we are rewarded.
Goal setting is a step by step process. Start small but definitely start somewhere. Make your goals a visual guideline by writing them down and posting them somewhere you look each day. Then, don’t just let them hang there, taped to your desk – update them, review them, and above all – set new goals! It’s an ongoing process, one that is both exciting and purposeful. It is our goals that have helped us successfully transition from independent companies to a bigger, more exciting business. We each have seperate goals as well as shared ones. We plan for both the short term an the long term.
Personally, before I started working for myself, I made a list of goals I had to achieve before I could quit my full time gig. Each time I check marked another goal fulfilled, I knew I was one step closer. It kept me focused and pointed in the right direction.
The day is yours to do with what you want. Make it a productive, goal-filled day!
