title pic Attention All Freelancers: Here’s Your Start

Posted by Tisha Tolar on January 19, 2009

So we have been talking endlessly about and reaffirming our beliefs that becoming a freelancer and/or starting your own business is an incredible experience if that is your dream. No one can force someone to do anything they don’t want to do but if your dream has always been (or has recently become) to set out at being your own boss, then you owe it to yourself to get started.

Getting started – that seems to be a big stopping point for so many people but you’re lucky, because here at Empowering Mom, we are all here for you. We’ll listen, we’ll advise, we’ll tell you how the heck we managed to do it. That is our mission. We want to see you succeed just as much as we want to be successful.

In order to get started, you obviously need an idea of what you want to do and how you can do it. It doesn’t always have to be the most perfect idea and you don’t always have to have the most formulated plan, unless of course you plan to start out at the gate needing investors or loans. If you are going at it on your own, you can usually work things out progressively and learn more from your experiences than you would from a business plan. Of course, that is not to say you should just jump in totally unprepared for the rocky road ahead but I am saying that if you keep putting off your start waiting for perfection, you just may never start.

One of the reasons that people stutter in their starts is because they don’t know how to do certain things. For me, it was taxes. I was scared to death I wouldn’t figure out how to do my bookkeeping in order to be able to get my first-year taxes done for my business. I was so freaked out, I almost backed out of starting several times just because of taxes. But you know what, I did it. I made it. I didn’t even get audited!! I also learned so much from the experience that I think now how silly I was for that way of thinking in the beginning.

For other people, you might have no way to establish a website or get your blog going. Well, the cool part about this site, is that there are people here who know all kinds of small business services and work freelance just like us. They understand the fears and frustrations of getting started. If you are looking for specific assistance without wanting to spend a fortune for crappy advice, give us a shout and we’ll see what we can do. We hope to start highlighting some of the service providers we know that can be instrumental in getting you going, like those lovely people who have helped us with not only getting started but those who keep us going.

So check back with us each day (as you should be doing anyway!) and meet some of the really cool people who keep us on track! They have been great resources for us and can be for you too!
