A 6 Year Old’s Perspective on Marketing
Posted by Tisha Tolar on December 16, 2008
So after what had to be one of the craziest weeks on record for me, I had to share this bit of insight with our
readers so that other’s too will enjoy a good and probably much needed guffaw during the chaos called the holidays.
Picture it – last week the kid and I were watching television and a commercial for Pixos came on. You know, the wierd dot creation craft that is held together with water? Well, the kid has wanted Pixos since she first saw the commericals a few years back. Well, I recall last year that Pixos were pulled from the market because they were a choking hazard – or so i thought. Since then I told her that she wouldn’t be getting Pixos because I didn’t want her to get hurt since I thought they might be dangerous. Like the great kid she is, she took my word for it and is now critical of the toy herself.
So, we were watching television and the commerical came on. Interestingly, there is a new bit added to the commerical that states they are safety-tested, something I had never heard mentioned before. After the mention of the safety testing, the kid goes “they are lying!”. She said it quite emphatically and it made me giggle. I replied that they weren’t really lying, but that is called marketing. She asked of course what marketing was. I told her that companies who want to sell their products made commercials to tell people how great their stuff was and made their things look pretty so people will buy them. She said said “yeah, lying!” Again, I said “No honey, it’s not really lying. It’s called marketing.”
She looked me dead in the face and with a little swivel of her neck, she replied “Look, I don’t care what YOU call it, I call that lying!”. It was then that I decided not to tell the kid her mommy does marketing. Nothing like finding out your mommy is a big, fat liar!
Ahhhh….from the mouths of babes.

lol! this is the cutest and most hilarious post ever! You have a very smart 6 year old. I remember my younger sister had the same wits – I’m always amazed at how fast they grow up now a days.
