title pic Today I’m Grateful For a Recession-Proof Business

Posted by Debbie Dragon on October 18, 2008

I spent the first two hours of my work day going through emails and scheduling work to be done.  This week I have made contact with several (potential) new clients, as well as taken on some new projects from existing clients.  I’m thrilled because I feel like I have a fairly recession-proof business.

Why do I think my business is recession-proof?

I’ve actually been giving this a lot of thought lately, due to all the economic concerns going on.  I’ve watched many people I know get laid off, lose their jobs, or listened to them express concern that they will soon not have a job.

Many businesses fail when people stop buying stuff, or when they have to start cutting back and buying on the necessities.  But think about it – what do people do when they’re short on cash and concerned about their financial futures?

Many of them start their own businesses.  Small, side businesses – many home based businesses - and freelance people start out looking for clients for their unique skills because they have a need to increase their income.  Who are my clients?  Mostly small business owners, independent business owners, freelancers, and home based business owners.

So, as more people go into business for themselves, and look to use the internet to market their products or services, or perhaps turn the internet into their own personal ATM, my phone rings more and my inbox fills up.  More people visit me at Make Money From Writing looking to turn words into cash… and more people read my work to learn how to get out of debt on the debt site I write for.

I think it’s as close to a recession-proof business as I could have.  And for that, I’m extremely grateful.
