I need a home office…
Posted by Trisha Wagner on October 17, 2008
After moving into my own home and leaving my aged computer behind for my mother to use, I lived for over a year without a computer in my house. I have access to the internet at work which covered my daily fix of news and celebrity blogs, so before I started my side job, I really didn’t miss having one at home either. Of course that changed in May when I started this gig of writing and other odds and ends online, which is when I purchased my first ever laptop. And unfortunately that is where I work, on my lap, in the recliner, in the middle of the living room even now….and it is almost November.
Something has got to give. At first it wasn’t so bad as I hadn’t yet decided that I could make a living doing this. I didn’t work on setting up my own space because really who needs it for an hour here and there. Let me tell you who needs it…..me……and I need it like yesterday. If you are considering working from home, make sure you add this important step to your to-do list before you start work. Not only does having a designated space help to seperate working mommy from non-working mommy to the rest of the family, it does the same for your own thoughts. Having a designated work area is important. That being said, this weekend, after I finish a few zillion other things, it is my goal to set up or at least stake out an area that will be my “do not disturb” zone. I will keep you posted on my progress which may actually assist me in making some, if someone else is keeping an eye on me!
That being said, sorry I missed posting yesterday. I went to check in with my friend who just returned from vacation; she is working on my son’s halloween costume thank goodness as I haven’t a crafty bone in my body. If the good Lord is willing, he won’t change his mind about what he wants to be between now and trick or treat night. Well regardless, he is going to be a scarecrow this year or a ghost in a white sheet as there is not much time to make him something new! Anyhoo, I got home from my visit and put my son to bed and woke up around 1am with a plastic elmo stuck in my back and little feet in my ribs….knowing that my chance to work for the night….had passed.

I have an office. I spent a lot of time designating a whole room in my house to work. I have a desk and corkboard and a filing cabinet and supplies, and so on and so on. Yeah – that lasted about ummm 2 months. I then went an purchased a laptop. I work on my lap while the family hangs out next to me. Don’t get me wrong – having a space all your own is ideal – especially mentally. But I think the number one quality needed is flexibility!! And fyi – you are free to work in my office any time. No one else is!!
