title pic Are you ready to go it alone?

Posted by Trisha Wagner on October 24, 2008

On this glorious fall day, I embarked on the ride to school and work with a lifted mood compared to the earlier days this week.  It probably has to do with the fact that it is FRIDAY and the WEEKEND is almost within reach.  Let’s pretend for a moment that  actually means a break from work.  If you haven’t already noticed, the “normal” work week does not apply to people who own their own business.  Even though as the new girl, I have yet to fully transition, I can rest assured that there will be work hours this weekend in addition to normal household responsibilities.

I tend to gear my topics toward people like myself who are considering or in the process of leaving their day job behind to pursue their own dreams.  It makes sense I would do that, as I am not yet qualified to speak as a sole proprietor.  As I start on my Journey to Freedom, I have had to consider many things.  At one point in the early stages, I spent considerable time and energy thinking worrying how everyone else would react to my decision.  After all, while my job is just a job-I have a steady income, health benefits, vacation days, steady income…you get the gist.  Historically I have not been a risk taker and to quit a job in the middle of the current economic CRISIS, well it seems…..some would say….stupid.  However, that being said, no one is guaranteed a job these days.  So wouldn’t it make sense to at least be in control of your own destiny?

The point of this rather long, drawn out, seemingly pointless post is this: Make sure you are doing this for yourself.  When working on your business plan think of how you will succeed on your own, aim to earn as much money as you need to survive without the help of your spouse or significant other.   When it comes to working and watching the kids have a plan that will actually provide you with some dedicated work time.  If you are thinking, “But I am only one person, how can I do it all?” you are right and you should still plan to do it all.  Each and every one of us is responsible for our own success or failure.  While it is great to have the support of your family and loved ones, there are no guarantees in life.    If you plan for the worse case scenario than you will be prepared to deal with it.  That being said, hopefully you DO have help and support from your loved ones but it is always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared.

I just want to point out that I am not encouraging you to start out believing you will fail.  I want you to start out knowing you will succeed!  I simply want you to have realistic goals and even more so- a realistic, well thought out, plan of action to achieve those goals.  I believe working for myself will likely be one of the hardest, yet most rewarding job I have ever had.  I wish you all luck in your endeavors where ever they may lead you!
