What To Do When Summer Comes?
Posted by Tisha Tolar on March 11, 2008
Only a few more weeks left of the school year. Hard to believe a first year of kindergarten has flown by so fast. I am still trying to come to terms with the fact I have a child in kindergarten, let along being prepared to send her on to the first grade. These are the earliest memories I have in my own mind – and I find it impossible that my own child has now reached that age!
When the final school bell rings, working moms everywhere just might be feeling a little more stressed. For work-at-home moms, life may change completely. I personally am not privy to friends and family who live close by that are able to take my daughter during some of the hours of a summer day. Most of my people work full time and there is no one I really know well in the area. So that leaves it all up to me. Her dad works dayshift, Monday through Friday so the summer’s entertainment is on my shoulders.
There is no way we could afford to hire full time help. We don’t really even had good summer programs she could paricipate in at her age. We are considering a gymnastics class maybe but I am overall glad I get to spend the summer with my kid. I have already decided since I get to sleep in a little in the morning, I will be more capable of working nights than I am not. I can not get up before the sun and then work till the wee hours without feeling the effects. I used to be such the night-owl. As my friend recently quipped, “when I stay up to watch the 11:00 news, I feel like I am pulling an all-nighter.” I guess that means I am an adult.
I don’t know if I will survive the change in schedule but I know that I want to spend the beautiful days of summer with my beautiful daughter while she still likes me a lot. We have a big yard and lots of room to roam. Sometimes keeping her occupied gets a little hard. She is counting on my to be creative and lead the parade. Thanks to my friend and co-hort, Debbie Dragon, who wrote the COOLEST ARTICLE EVER about entertaining kids for free- it looks like I’ll be ready to turn life as I know it upside down and have a blast!!!
Hope you do too! They don’t stay little long and the work will never go away!

Thanks for visiting my Biz Chicks Rule blog and leaving your comment. Yes, I am rather concerned about what we’re all going to do once summer gets here. I hate to make school a babysitter, but we do need some creativity when it comes to entertaining the kids AND getting our work done.
