Starting Fresh….
Posted by Tisha Tolar on December 30, 2007
I know it has been awhile….apologies all around. The holidays, school vacations, and the like do not always coincide with working at home for yourself. Around this time, I get to work on the bare minimum – the stuff that pays the bills. There is a lot of the mom guilt we discussed earlier around this time of year too! But most things are now on the downslope for me. School will be back in session soon and I am using my time to plan for the new year. Fact is – it’s Sunday and I plan to be working all day today.
Planning is such an integral part of working for yourself. Those cute little notebooks you got yourself are useless unless you actually write in them. Get calendars and use them, even when it seems like you have “nothing to do”. Face it – wife, mother, business owner – there is always something for you to do! And trust me – if you don’t start writing down everything in the beginning as it happens, you will fall so far behind! (kinda’ like I have in the last month!!) It’s great to have a booming business but if you can’t keep up with yourself, what’s the point?
Of course EVERYONE means well when they stake their New Year’s Resolution flag. As a relatively new business owner, I realize now more than ever how much I have to stick to these goals I am setting for myself. The last month I found myself stuck in a rut. There was no one to blame but me! I am the boss. DUH – isn’t that why I started all this in the first place? Of course it is. It takes some time to sort it all out, to figure out how time management works best for you. It isn’t as easy as people may think. It comes with a whole new set of guilts. But as my great friend Debbie once said “Ya’ just gotta turn that damn guilt switch off”. She’s right!
I wish you all an incredibly prosperous 2008, whether you are starting out new or plugging away for another year. Just appreciate the opportunity you have provided yourself and take full advantage of everyday, as is my goal for this new year. If you are still not sure about starting out on your own, just keep thinking about it and weigh the pros and cons. AND know you are definately not alone in your adventure. Peace out-
